Transportation

Council Bluffs is in the middle of an eight-state market and is surrounded by more than 35 million people. The city's central location allows it logistical access to markets all across .the country. Interstates 29 and 80, which come together at Council Bluffs, provide overnight access to many Midwest markets. In addition to the Interstate access to and from Council Bluffs, four U .S. and six state highways also provide road access to Council Bluffs.

Air service is provided to Council Bluffs at Council Bluffs City Airport (712) 323-4682, and Eppley Airfield, ( 402) 422-6817, which is just across the Missouri River, less than 15 minutes from Council Bluffs, in Omaha. The Council Bluffs Municipal Airport, a public use, general aviation airport, is located approximately two miles east of Council Bluffs and includes a hard-surface runway capable of handling corporate aircraft. All aircraft services are provided at the airport. Eppley Airfield is serviced by more than 10 airlines offering nonstop service to most major u.s cities.

Council Bluffs is a major railroad hub, with service provided by Union Pacific, Burlington, Northern Santa-Fe, Canadian National and Iowa Interstate. Amtrak passenger service, (800) 872- 7245, is provided from Omaha.

The Council Bluffs-Omaha area is served by Metropolitan Area Transit, (MAT), (402) 341-0800. MAT operates a fleet of buses, with regular line service throughout the area.

Because of its location on the Missouri River, a navigable, inland waterway, Council Bluffs is in great position to access approximately 25,000 miles of water transportation for goods and services. Two barge lines serve the area and the river is navigable from the months of April to November. Because of its central location, a large number of motor freight carriers serve the Council Bluffs area with fixed routes.
