Education

Council Bluffs Community Schools office, (712) 328-6446, is located at 12 Scott Street, Council Bluffs. The district consists of three high schools, two junior high schools and 14 elementary schools. Council Bluffs' education community is one of high quality.Test scores in Iowa rank among the highest in the nation and Council Bluffs' schools do their part to contribute to the state's great reputation.

The city's schools have some of the lowest teacher-to- student ratios in the nation, and 78 percent of all students complete some forn of post -secondary study.

Not only does Council Bluffs offer great schools, the area has a variety of vocational and technical education options.

Private schools serving the area include St. Albert Parochial Schools, (712) 329-9000; Community Christian School, (712) 322-4800; Liberty Christian School, (712) 322-2321; Loess Christian School, (712) 322-5817; and Trinity Lutheran Interparish School, (712) 322-3294. Iowa School for the Deaf, (712) 366- 0571, is a state-supported school for Iowa and Nebraska students, under age 21, with hearing loss.

Higher Education

Quality higher education opportunities are offered in close proximity to Council Bluffs. Two community colleges, five universities and two medical schools are in the area. Omaha, Nebraska is less than ten miles from Council Bluffs and offers additional opportunities for higher learning in the Council Bluffs area.

Iowa Western Community College, (712) 325-3200 or (800) 432-5852, has campuses in Council Bluffs, Clarinda and three regional centers and serves a seven-county area in southwest Iowa. IWCC offers students more than 80 majors and the Iowa Western Continuing Education Department offers a variety of courses serving 40,000 students annually.

Buena Vista University, (712) 328-0788 or (800) 798-0788, located on the Iowa Western Community College campus, offers bachelor degree programs in an accelerated format. Programs include accounting, computer science, elementary education, English, finance and banking, history, human services, human resources, criminal justice, management/entrepreneurship, psychology and teacher certification.

Southwest Iowa Regents .Resource Center (SWIRRC), (712) 366-3647, is the Council Bluffs area's link with Iowa's three state universities: Iowa State University, University of Northern Iowa and University of Iowa. The center is located at Iowa School for the Deaf Campus at 1600 South Highway 275. SWIRRC allows access to a variety of graduate programs, including education, agriculture, engineering, library and information science, pharmacy, public management, family and consumer sciences and family financial counselors certification.

Metropolitan Community College, ( 402) 457-2400, offers more than lOO vocational and academic programs. It serves more than 45,000 credit students and noncredit students on three campuses and nine off -campus sites in Nebraska.

Bellevue University, ( 402) 291-8100 or (800) 756- 7920, is an information-age institution of higher learning with progressive options for online graduate and undergraduate degrees. As one of Nebraska's largest, fully accredited, independent colleges, its programs serve the needs of more than 3,000 students annually and cater to working adult students.

The College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and the College of Professional Studies offer more than 36 majors.

The Lozier Professional Center located at 2810 North 118th Circle in West Omaha is a high-tech facility hosting programs directed toward information technology and corporate training.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha, (402) 554-2800, offers more than 190 degree programs from bachelor to select doctoral degrees. The University of Nebraska Medical Center, ( 402) 559-4000, educates more health-care professionals for Nebraska than any other institution. UNMC includes Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry and Pharmacy, the School of Allied Health Professions and the Office of Graduate Studies.

Creighton University, (402) 280-2703, is a private Jesuit university. Creighton offers undergraduate degrees in 42 subjects as well as 22 graduate level degrees and professional degrees in medicine, dentistry, law, pharmacy and allied health professions. Nontraditional students are also served with a variety of evening degree and certificate programs.

College of St. Mary, (402) 399-2400, is the only independent ] Catholic women's college in a five- state area. College of St. Mary has ,a tradition of a values-centered education and offers associate and bachelor degrees in 30 programs of study.

Clarkson College, ( 402) 552-3100, is a health science institution which offers four-year, associate, bachelor and master degrees with programs in nursing and allied health.

Grace University, ( 402) 449-2800, is a fully accredited, independent, small university. For more than 50 years, the university has equipped Christian students for life, ministry and service.

Nebraska Methodist College, ( 402) 354-4879, offers bachelor, associate and master degrees in the health sciences.

Omaha ITT Technical Institute, (402) 331-2900, teaches highly skilled electronic- ( engineering technology and computer-aided drafting and courses in computer networking systems technologies.

Nebraska College of Business, ( 402) 572-8500, is an independent, private, two-year junior college dedicated to providing students with career, personal and social skills that will enable them to seek and secure careers in business, industry and government.

Omaha Opportunities Industrialization Center, (402) 457 -4222, is a private, nonprofit vocational training school designed for the unemployed and underemployed.

Vatterott College, (402) 731-3636, offers day and evening classes by certified technicians and instructors.
